Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge certain decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
