2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Comes After Poor Response
The new appointee steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive a key figure informed employees about this strategic move through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had shown the requirement for a clearer game identity.
The president noted that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to address gamer demands.
Trend of Key Hires
The news echoes a comparable step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the entire content from the president's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a message, I stated the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re excited for that relationship to persist.”
Through your commitment and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It validated the promise of a action-packed game but indicated we still had improvements to make. It revealed the need for a clearer vision.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the feedback to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a revitalized goal - one that’s positioned to achieve its ambition to our audience.
The trust in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To advance the outstanding development you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. Following a period of discussions, Ben starts with us on Monday, October 20.
His management and background in the competitive gaming genre is vast, having dedicated the past decade and a half producing and managing some of the most well-known titles in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in welcoming him soon. We are all excited to continue witnessing the evolution of the game in the months to come.
David
Background of the Incoming Leader
Brinkman presently holds the position of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He previously worked at major gaming companies in various production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had periods at other industry leaders.
Title Details and Vision
The upcoming game was revealed in last year in conjunction with a public demo. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch reads. "Face the rivals with fresh skills, risks, and tests that change every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and trust your team can earn top ranking? The decision is in your hands."
The game lacks an official release date or platforms, but fans can look forward to additional details as creation progresses.
