One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in January, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will release a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” However, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a half-year pause that began in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to supply fans with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with others instead covering more material or additional to compensate for time.

It's the end of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally itself have numerous side stories, and the standard of the art can change drastically between installments and the next. Today, series creation is organized in seasons, with one or two maximum coming out each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
