British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts down to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
