Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
